I believe that “The Animal School” was a satire of the American educational system. It told the tale of a group of animals who believed that they needed to create a school in order to be relevant in a new world. Their school curriculum consisted of teaching very different animals a standard set of skills.
Some animals were more suited to certain skills, while they lacked the physical traits to learn other skills. The school system made them focus more on the skills that they lacked in order to pass, which made their performance in their preferred skills suffer greatly. Some animals refused to join the school because of this standardized method of teaching skills, and instead chose to create a different type of school that taught important skills to animals who would benefit from them.
I agree with the some of the comments to the story. I do not believe that the “one-size: fits all mentality is a good idea. Forcing everyone to be average at all their classes does not help students or animals excel in their strengths.
The strengths of the individual should be nurtured, and they should not suffer just so the person can be average in other abilities. I think that the private school system that the prairie dogs and the gophers created is a good alternative to the standardized system the other animals were following. They were hoping to teach to the strengths of their species, because the standardized system wouldn’t add their preferred skills to the curriculum.
The college humor video was a commentary on the advertising techniques that many colleges use in order to attract new students. I found it to be funny, but also painfully true because I recognized that most of the things that they video talked about were also true about Bloomsburg University. In this town, it is not uncommon to see underage students wandering the streets on the weekends in order to find a party where they can get a drink.
I was disturbed by the male, who had his head in the toilet, when he told the camera that his father was working four jobs just so he could go to college. That upset me because I know this sort of behavior is also prevalent. Some students take advantage of their parents and whatever hardships they have to endure, just so they can come to college and experience the famous “college party”.
I found that satirical video to be amusing when I first watched it, but the more I think about it the less amusing I find it. I agree with Dr. Sherry’s comment that “comedy is the truth, only faster”. The video pointed out a lot of flaws in the higher educational system, where money is first and education is second, and the general attitude of many college students who do not appreciate what it takes to send someone to college.
